Best time of year to move house in Sydney
Spring is Sydney's driest season, but it is not the only good one. Add up the Bureau of Meteorology's climate statistics for Sydney month by month and September, October and November come to 228.6 mm of mean rainfall. That is the lowest of the four seasons. Summer comes to 297.6 mm, winter to 309.6 mm and autumn to 375.5 mm. Those totals are our estimate: we added the Bureau's three monthly means for each season.
The rain days tell a closer story. Spring and winter both come to 23.3 days of 1 mm or more across their three months, against 25.5 in summer and 27.4 in autumn. That is again our sum of the monthly means. Winter's rain falls harder, because June is one of the two wettest months at 133.1 mm. It does not fall on more days.
Winter is also the only season wholly outside storm season. The NSW SES puts storm season between September and April, "although major storms can happen at any time of the year".
So our view at Punt Road Removals is that spring is a strong middle option, not the single best one. For many households the date turns on the lease, the school calendar and how busy the trade is, with weather a further factor.
The numbers come from Observatory Hill in the CBD, with rainfall records from 1858 and temperatures from 1859, both to 2020. They are Sydney averages to plan with, not a forecast for your street.

SES: September to April, although major storms can happen at any time of the year
Each season trades one thing for another. Summer has the longest light and the hottest days, with a mean January maximum of 26.0°C. It also carries the six-week summer school holidays and a run of public holidays. Autumn is the wettest stretch, with March at 131.6 mm. Winter is cool, with a July mean maximum of 16.4°C, and has only one short school break.
Then there is how busy the trade is. A commercial comparison site reports that demand clusters from November to February, at month end and on weekends, and says winter, mid-month and midweek are quietest. Treat that as industry commentary, not a measured count. It still matches the pattern you would expect when families, renters and the holiday calendar all point at the same weeks.
Is spring a good time to move?
For the weather, mostly yes. September has the lowest mean rainfall of any month and, with August, the fewest rain days, 68.1 mm over 7.1 days. Mean maximums climb from 20.1°C in September to 23.7°C in November, which is comfortable carrying weather. The air is drier too: mean 9am humidity runs 61 to 62% in September and October, against 71 to 74% from January to June.
The light helps as well. Daylight saving began on Sunday 4 October 2026 and runs to Sunday 4 April 2027, which gives a late finish more evening light.
Spring has three catches.
- Wind. Mean 3pm wind speed is highest from October to December, at 19.1 to 19.5 km/h. A mattress or a wardrobe panel catches that like a sail on the walk to the truck.
- Storms. Spring sits inside the SES storm season, so a clear forecast a week out is not a promise.
- Demand. November falls inside the busy stretch that the commentary above describes.
This year's spring school holidays (28 September to 9 October) are already behind us. The next spring break runs from 27 September to 8 October 2027.
How to pick your date around holidays and busy weeks
Start with what you can't move: a lease end, a settlement, a school start. Then work outwards from there.
For families, Term 4 runs from Tuesday 13 October to Thursday 17 December 2026. The summer holidays then run from Friday 18 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027, and Term 1 starts on Wednesday 3 February 2027 in the eastern division.
The public holidays bunch up inside that break. Christmas Day is a Friday, Boxing Day a Saturday, with an additional public holiday on Monday 28 December 2026. New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday and Australia Day is Tuesday 26 January. Further out, Good Friday to Easter Monday is 26 to 29 March 2027, the King's Birthday is Monday 14 June and Labour Day is Monday 4 October.
Dates matter for a legal reason too. NSW Fair Trading says that under Australian Consumer Law a service must be provided in a reasonable time when no time is set. What counts as reasonable depends on factors "such as busy periods and public holidays". The fix is simple: set the time. Fair Trading says the contract should state the pick-up and delivery addresses, dates and times.
If you have room to move, ask for a weekday quote, ideally mid-month. You are asking for a date the trade is said to have more room on. That is not the same as a discount, so compare the written quotes rather than assuming one.
If you're moving over summer or in storm season
Summer sits wholly inside storm season, which the NSW SES puts between September and April, so the plan is the same for both: book early, pack so nothing has to sit outside, and decide in advance what happens if the sky turns.
- Book as soon as the date is fixed. The summer weeks sit inside the stretch where demand is reported to cluster.
- Ask the weather question at quote time. CHOICE lists "What happens in the event of bad weather?" among the questions to ask.
- Pack for indoors. Every carton should be able to wait inside, closed and stacked, until it is carried straight to the truck.
- On a storm day, follow the SES. Its storm-day advice is "Do not travel unless you absolutely need to", and to secure or put away items that could blow around. That is the moment the delay and storage terms in your contract matter.
- Check insurance at both addresses. CHOICE says most insurers cover contents at both addresses while you move, usually for 14 days and up to 60 for some. Some policies cover only certain events, and one or two insurers require a professional removalist.
- Call the utilities early. CHOICE says to contact your electricity and gas provider at least a couple of weeks before the move, because disconnection can take up to a week.
- Deal with the barbecue. AFRA says to have BBQ gas bottles purged by an authorised dealer and to empty petrol-powered items.
- Keep the essentials with you. Pack a box of immediate-need items and keep valuables and documents with you, as AFRA advises.
Around Gladesville, carry distance and dock access often set the pace of a move, and rain slows both. Our guides to moving on a steep street and the Gladesville unit move cover how to plan both.
What to ask the removalist, whatever the season
The season changes the risks. It does not change the questions. CHOICE advises getting at least three written, itemised quotes, and these are the questions to put to each one.
- What happens in the event of bad weather?
- Is this an hourly rate? CHOICE points out that an hourly quote is a rate, not a number of hours. Our guide to how removalist hourly rates work explains what moves the total.
- Will access or parking add time? CHOICE gives the example of a ferry vehicle where a large truck can't park close.
- Are law-mandated staff breaks payable? On a long move, they may be.
- What happens if there is a delay? Fair Trading says the contract should state whether there are extra costs for storage if there are delays, as well as how payment is made.
Don't assume the removalist's insurance covers your belongings: removalists are not required by law to insure your property, most carry cover only for their vehicle. AFRA-accredited removalists can provide transit cover, which you pay for.
A quote is only as good as the list behind it. Our room-by-room inventory guide for quote day shows how to build that list.
Which season suits your household?
Is your date set by a lease end?
Renters: book once the date is known, and get the dates and times written into the contract.
Are you tied to school terms?
Families: summer holidays 18 Dec 2026 to 27 Jan 2027 (book early: demand reported to cluster November to February, industry commentary) or winter holidays 5 to 16 Jul 2027 (outside SES storm season, although major storms can happen at any time of the year).
Are your dates flexible?
Downsizers and other flexible movers: mid-month weekdays are said to be quieter (industry commentary); spring is driest by rainfall, winter has as few rain days.
Renters tied to a lease date. The season picks itself, so the job is locking the date in. Book once you know it, and get the dates and times written into the contract. If your bond is moving with you, our guide to Smart Rental Bonds walks through the transfer.
Families tied to school terms. The summer holidays give the longest run without losing school days, but they fall in the busiest reported stretch. Book early if that is your window. The winter holidays, 5 to 16 July 2027, are the alternative: shorter, cooler and outside the SES storm season, though major storms can still happen at any time.
Downsizers and anyone with flexibility. You have the most choice, so use it. Spring gives the driest months and winter gives as few rain days, and a mid-month weekday is worth asking about in either season. Our downsizer's plan and the packing order help you use the extra weeks well.
