Moving on the October long weekend: why it books out and how to plan it

In 2027 the October long weekend is hard to book: Labour Day falls inside the spring school holidays and straight after month-end, when many leases turn over, so book early, get a written itemised quote and ask how holiday work is charged.

In 2027 the October long weekend is more than a public holiday. On our count, three busy patterns meet on the same few days. Labour Day is Monday 4 October 2027. The spring school holidays run Monday 27 September to Friday 8 October 2027. Because 4 October is a Monday, September ends on Thursday 30 September. That makes Friday 1 to Monday 4 October the first four days of a new month, all inside the holidays. Neither NSW page says this. It is our calendar arithmetic from the two of them.

What it means for you: if that weekend is your date, book it early and get everything in writing. If your date can move, a weekday later in October is worth asking about.

Start with the demand pattern. Selectra, a comparison site, says moving demand is highest at the end of each month when leases turn over, and on weekends. It also suggests public-holiday long weekends are best avoided if a cheaper move is the goal. That is industry commentary, not a rule, but the logic is simple. People with a day off all want the same days.

October itself is filling up. Selectra calls it a "shoulder" month that gets busier as spring lettings and the pre-summer rush build.

The overlap is not new. In 2026, Labour Day was Monday 5 October, inside the spring holidays of 28 September to 9 October 2026. In 2027 it is a day tighter: September ends on the Thursday, so the long weekend starts on 2 October rather than the 3rd.

A crowded weekend also affects timing. NSW Fair Trading says removalist services must be delivered within a reasonable time when no time is set, and that what counts as reasonable depends on factors including busy periods and public holidays. The fix is to set the date and time in the contract rather than leave them open.

Outside the summer break, October's is the only 2027 long weekend inside the school holidays. (New Year's and Christmas both fall inside the summer holidays.) Anzac Day's long weekend, Saturday 24 to Monday 26 April 2027, starts the day after the autumn holidays end. Easter runs Friday 26 to Monday 29 March 2027 and King's Birthday is Monday 14 June 2027. The nearest holidays to those are autumn, 12 to 23 April, and winter, 5 to 16 July.

King's Birthday sits mid-month in June, the month Selectra rates its quietest, though Selectra's cheapest window is a weekday away from any long weekend. Easter, by Selectra's account, spikes briefly.

Can I move on a long weekend?

Is your moving date fixed?

No

Consider a weekday later in October, after Term 4 starts Mon 11 Oct 2027.

Yes

Do you work Monday to Friday and need the extra day off?

Yes

The long weekend can make sense: book early and ask how holiday work is charged.

No

Ask whether Fri 1 Oct or Tue 5 Oct suits you and the removalist.

Yes, if a removalist has the date and the cost works for you. NSW says an employee working a gazetted public holiday is in most cases, entitled to extra payment, usually a penalty or loading, depending on the award or agreement. Ask whether holiday work is charged differently, and have the answer shown on the quote.

A long weekend makes the most sense if you work Monday to Friday and need the spare day to unpack. It makes less sense if your date is flexible. Then a weekday later in the month, after Term 4 starts Monday 11 October 2027, may suit better. We cover what each season gives you in our guide to the best time of year to move house in Sydney.

If your lease does tie you to that week, ask about the days either side. Friday 1 October is not a public holiday. Tuesday 5 October is a working day again, though still in the school holidays.

What to ask before booking a public holiday move

Questions for a long-weekend quote

Source: NSW Fair Trading, CHOICE and NSW Government, public holidays

Fair Trading advises getting a written, itemised quote. The contract should state your household inventory, both addresses, dates and times, how payment is made, including whether it is upfront, and any storage costs if there are delays. Our room-by-room inventory list makes that first part quicker.

Two CHOICE questions matter more on a tight weekend: "What happens in the event of bad weather?" and "If there are any delays on the day, is there an extra cost involved for storage?". The first is not idle. October falls in NSW storm season, between September and April, and a holiday weekend leaves little room to reschedule.

Be clear on the pricing model too. AFRA's executive director, quoted by CHOICE, notes an hourly rate is not a quote for the hours the move takes. Access and parking can add a second "ferry" vehicle where the truck cannot get close. If you want certainty, she suggests asking for a fixed price. Our guide to how removalist hourly rates work goes further.

Do not assume the removalist's insurance covers your belongings: removalists are not required by law to insure your property, so check your own policy or transit cover. Fair Trading adds that AFRA-accredited removalists have public liability insurance and can provide transit insurance. Ask what that cover costs.

Check the building's rules before you pick the date. NSW strata by-laws bind all residents, and each scheme's differ. If you rent, your agent or landlord must give you a copy of the by-laws before you sign.

Then ask the strata manager about any move-in and move-out rules before booking the truck. We would make that call well before the long weekend, because a manager may be harder to reach once it starts. Lifts, loading docks and clearways are covered in our Gladesville unit move guide.

What admin won't wait until Tuesday?

  1. At least two weeks beforecontact gas and electricity providers (disconnection can take up to a week).
  2. Around the same timebook your move date through your internet provider's form.
  3. By the date on your termination noticeleave the place clean and empty, return all keys.
  4. Final inspectionthe agent or landlord must give you a reasonable chance to attend.
  5. After you moveupdate your address with Service NSW (MyServiceNSW account needed).

Utilities come first. CHOICE says to contact your gas and electricity provider at least a couple of weeks before moving, as disconnection can take up to a week. Internet providers usually have a form to book a move date. We would get all three done before the weekend. A public holiday is a poor day to chase a provider.

If you rent, the lease end matters more than the long weekend. Leave by the date on the termination notice, return all keys, and leave the place clean and empty. The agent or landlord must give you a reasonable chance to attend the final inspection. If you do not, the condition report can be completed without you. For the bond, see how to move your bond to your next NSW rental.

Once you are in, update your address with Service NSW for your licence, registration, Opal and electoral roll. You will need a MyServiceNSW account.

Planning an October move with Punt Road Removals

If the October long weekend is the only date that works for you, the move is about getting in early and pinning the details down. Send Punt Road Removals your dates, both addresses and a rough inventory through our removals quote page. Ask us how holiday work would be charged and what happens if the weather turns. If your date is flexible, tell us that too, and we can talk through the days around it. You can also map out each end of the move with our Both Ends planner.
